ULT Freezer best practice: Allow sufficient spacing around the freezer for adequate airflow

Poor Spacing

Keeping a distance of ≥50cm at the sides and rear of the ULT freezer is another action an end user can take. Doing so provides the space for airflow, allowing the warm air ejected at the rear of the unit to rise and dissipate.

To simulate poor spacing the rear of the ULT freezer was pushed flat against the wall with boxes and containers placed on top and on both sides of the freezer.

Our Switch to 100% Renewable Energy!

As part of our continued work to reduce our scope emissions, we made the decision to source 100% certified renewable energy on our Nottingham site.

This means that our electricity is generated purely from wind and hydro assets matched to Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs). This choice has meant that every year on average we prevent 32 tCO2e from being produced.

This is equivalent to planting over 1200 trees or taking seven petrol cars off UK roads every single year.

We recognise that our journey to reducing our environmental impact is ongoing, and whilst we have committed to sourcing renewable energy, we still endeavour to reduce the amount of energy we consume via improved internal practices.

ULT Freezer best practice: Keep the filter clean and unobstructed.

Introduction

Ultra-Low Temperature (ULT) freezers are well known to be high consumers of energy. Holding set temperatures 90°C to 100°C colder than their environment will always require a significant amount of energy. In recent months, the rise in energy costs has further placed emphasis on lab equipment running costs and means by which energy can be conserved.

ULT freezer best practices are often promoted by individual organizations, manufacturers, insurers, and LEAF (the leading lab sustainability certification scheme). Although best practices are widely encouraged, very little quantified data exists outside of changing the set temperature of the ULT freezer from -80°C to -70°C.

By warming up, modern ULT freezer energy consumption will be reduced by 18-34% depending on the model, age, and condition of the unit. However, the energy cost of bad practice has rarely been quantified.

In 2014, two LGBT+ scientists, Dr William Moerner and Dr Stefan Hell, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work in developing the field of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy.

Dr Hell and Dr Moerner are both exceptional scientists who have made groundbreaking contributions to the field of chemistry.

However, they are not only remarkable for their scientific achievements, but also for their courage and commitment to promoting LGBT+ rights and equality.

In celebration of Gertrude B. Elion's Birthday!

Gertrude B. Elion was a renowned biochemist and pharmacologist who made significant contributions to the development of drugs to treat leukemia and other diseases.

She spent much of her career working at the Burroughs Wellcome Company, where she developed a number of important drugs, including the first purine antagonist used to treat leukemia, 6-mercaptopurine, and the first immunosuppressive agent, azathioprine.

These drugs were used to treat leukemia and other cancers, as well as to prevent rejection of transplanted organs. Gertrude was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1988, along with George Hitchings and Sir James Black, for their work on developing drugs that target specific enzymes and receptors.

Elion's work revolutionised the field of pharmacology and had a profound impact on the treatment of cancer and other diseases. She was also a dedicated mentor to young scientists and a strong advocate for women in science throughout her career.

On January 8th, it is Professor Stephen Hawking's Birthday!

Stephen Hawking is one of the most influential scientists of the 21st century. Hawking was born in Oxford, England, in 1942 and attended University College, Oxford, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in physics.

Hawking is best known for his work on the properties of black holes and demonstrated that a black hole could be completely described by its mass, electric charge, and angular momentum. He also proposed the theoretical basis for Hawking radiation, the phenomenon that black holes can emit particles.
