This essential part of any Drosophila research lab uses CO2 to anaesthetise flies. There are countless different apparatus configurations to suit your lab’s needs. These carefully designed components, when used properly, are intended to minimise your CO2 usage, saving you money over time. All of the Flystuff anaesthesia network uses standard 3mm (1/8in) ID tubing.
- Regulators – Regulators attach to a CO2 canister, and allow you to adjust the amount of flow directly from the canister. The radiator regulator is finned to help prevent freezing, excellent for heavy gas flow with multiple fly station setups
- Bubbler – The CO2 bubblers prevent your flies from drying out on the Flypad while also helping to reduce static. This product comes in three convenient sizes to fit standard 500mL, 1000mL, and 2000mL Erlenmeyer flasks
- Flypad – The Flypad is a staging area with CO2 flowing through it to ensure your flies remain anaesthetised. Each Flypad is made up of UHMW porous polyethylene fused to an acrylic base. The precision routed maze maintains a flat, warp-free surface and also assures optimal, consistent diffusion of CO2 throughout the staging area. The Ultimate Flypad has a metal casing to reduce static, and allows for easy replacing of pads (59-199 or 59-199B). Barbed input (FLY1352) must be purchased seperately.
- Flowbuddy – The Flowbuddy acts as a flow regulator that adds precision CO2 flow control to any workstation. The toggle switch is used to instantly start and stop CO2 flow with ease. The CO2 flow to the 2 barbed outputs is adjusted with the Flowbuddy’s knurled knob in LPM, with visual confirmation from the built-in flowmeter. The Flowbuddy is gauged up to 100psi, so you can safely leave the tank gauges open
- Foot Pedal – The foot pedal allows for hands-free precision control of the CO2 flow to the Flypad. This lowers the risk of drying your flies out and can reduce CO2 usage by 500% or more
- Blowgun – The Flystuff pistol-grip blowgun offers variable flow control, and is the perfect complement to any CO2 anesthetizing apparatus. The output is a stainless steel needle, allowing for easy anesthetising of flies while in bottles or vials
